In the sports field last year, there was confusion such as plans for the new National Stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the withdrawal of the tournament emblem, but we were runners-up at the Women's Soccer World Cup in Canada from June to July, and the Rugby World Cup from September to October. At the England Games, they achieved a historic feat by defeating favorite South Africa to win three games in one tournament, and at the World Gymnastics Championships from October to November, the men's team won for the first time in 37 years, and Uchimura won his sixth consecutive individual all-around title. The good news continued.
In the field of industrial science, the Hokuriku Shinkansen line between Nagano and Kanazawa opened in March, and in December it was reported that the Indian government had decided to adopt Japan's Shinkansen system for its planned high-speed railway. In November, Japan's first jet passenger aircraft, the MRJ, successfully made its maiden flight, in the same month, the H2A rocket succeeded in Japan's first pure commercial launch, and in December, the Venus probe Akatsuki successfully entered orbit, demonstrating the strength of Japanese technology. This marked the beginning of the project receiving international acclaim.
The Nobel Prizes were announced in October, and Satoshi Omura (distinguished professor emeritus at Kitasato University) was selected for the Physiology or Medicine Prize, and Takaaki Kajita (Director of the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research at the University of Tokyo) was selected for the Physics Prize, continuing good news from last year. .
On the other hand, in the area of natural disasters, the eruption of Mt. Shindake on Kuchinoerabu Island occurred in May, followed by increased volcanic activity at Mt. Hakone, Mt. Sakurajima, Mt. Aso, etc., and heavy rains in the Kanto and Tohoku regions caused by Typhoons No. 17 and 18 in September. The Kinugawa River's embankment burst in Joso City, Ibaraki Prefecture, causing large-scale flooding, and Inagi City also dispatched an emergency fire assistance team.
