Frequently Asked Questions (National Health Insurance)
QuestionI received a Health Insurance Card with a short expiration date. Why is that?
Response
The Health Insurance Card is updated every two years on October 1, so the expiration date is until September 30.
The following are cases where a Health Insurance Card with a short expiration date is issued.
- Those who turn 75 by September 30 will transition to the Late-Stage Elderly Medical Care system from their 75th birthday, so the expiration date will be the day before their birthday.
- If you fail to pay the National Health Insurance Tax and do not respond to reminders or tax consultation, a Health Insurance Card with a short validity period (Short-term Health Insurance Card) will be issued. Households that have been issued a Short-term Health Insurance Card may need to go through renewal procedures each time it expires.
- For foreign residents, the expiration date will be the same as the expiration date of the residence card. If the residence card is renewed, you can receive a new Health Insurance Card at City Hall or the Branch Office (Hirao or Wakabadai). Please bring your new residence card at that time.
- For those who are subject to the retirement medical system, the validity period of the Health Insurance Card may be shortened due to the termination of the application of the system. A new Health Insurance Card will be mailed in late month of the expiration date. However, this does not apply if you fall under the above point 2.
