Alert regarding fraudulent claims impersonating Amazon Japan LLC, attempting to collect payments for unpaid fees for paid videos via SMS.
Consumers are receiving SMS (Short Message Service) messages stating, "You have unpaid fees for paid videos. If you do not contact us by today, we will proceed with legal action. Amazon ●●," and "You have unpaid membership fees. If you do not contact us by today, we will proceed with small claims court procedures. Amazon ●●." Additionally, there have been reports to various Consumer Affairs Centers regarding business operators who, after consumers contact the phone number listed in the SMS, say things like, "If you do not pay, it will lead to a lawsuit," and "If you pay today, you will be refunded later," in an attempt to extort money under the pretext of unpaid fees for paid videos.
The Consumer Affairs Agency has provided information based on Article 38, Paragraph 1 of the Consumer Safety Act (Act No. 50 of 2009), indicating that there are acts that may unjustly harm consumers' interests in transactions with business operators impersonating Amazon Japan LLC or its affiliates (business operators impersonating Amazon). This notice is to inform consumers in order to prevent the occurrence or expansion of consumer harm.
Note: In November 2017, the Consumer Affairs Agency issued a similar alert, but due to the ongoing and increasing consumer damage related to business operators impersonating Amazon, this notification has been issued again.
