Please tell me about the student payment exception system for the national pension.

If you are a student (note 1) and have difficulty paying premiums, please apply for the Special Payment System for Students, which allows you to defer the payment of premiums while you are in school.

Target audience

All people living in Japan become insured persons of the National Pension from the time they turn 20 and are obligated to pay insurance premiums. In this case, there is a special payment system for students that allows you to defer the payment of insurance premiums while you are in school. In addition, the amount of income of the family does not matter.

(Note 1) Students are those who are enrolled in universities (graduate schools), junior colleges, high schools, technical colleges, specialized training colleges, miscellaneous schools (Note 3), and Japanese branch schools of some overseas universities. Most students are eligible, as this includes students in regular courses and correspondence courses.

(Note 2) Previous year's income standard (applicant only)
1,280,000 yen + number of dependents x 380,000 yen + social insurance premium deduction, etc.
(Note 3) Miscellaneous schools are schools with a course period of one year or more and that are approved by the prefectural governor.

From April to March of the following year If you have been approved for the special payment system for students this year and will be attending the same school again the following year, the Japan Pension Service will send you an "Application for Special Payment for Students" in postcard format. . You can complete the procedure by filling in the necessary information and sending it back. The results of the examination will be notified by the Japan Pension Service at a later date.

Relationship with Old-age Basic Pension

In principle, in order to receive the old-age basic pension, it is necessary to have paid the insurance premiums for at least 10 years, but the period for which the special payment system for students has been approved is the 10-year or longer eligible period for receiving the old-age basic pension. will be included in But it is not included in period targeted for calculation of amount of old-age basic pension (explanatory note: premium paid period of 40 years is necessary to receive full old-age basic pension).
For this reason, in order to receive the full old-age basic pension in the future, it is possible to retroactively pay premiums during the student payment special payment period up to 10 years ago (before the third year). (If you pay the additional amount, a certain additional amount will be added to the insurance premium at that time.)

Relationship with Disability Basic Pension, etc.

In the event of an unforeseen event such as disability or death, one of the following payment requirements must be met in order to claim the Disability Basic Pension or the Survivors' Basic Pension. , It will be the target period of the requirement, so you can rest assured even in case of emergency.
(1) On the date of the first medical examination or the day before the date of death, two-thirds or more of the insured period (including the premium exemption period) of the insured period until the month before the date of the first medical examination or the date of death. (2) If the date of the first medical examination or the date of death is on or before March 31, 2026, the insurance premium will be paid on the day before the date of the first medical examination or the date of death for the last one year up to two months before the date of the first medical examination or the date of death. not be in arrears

Notes <br id="3"/>You can pay your insurance premiums retroactively (later payment) within 10 years during the period when you have been approved for the student payment exception. However, if you make a late payment of your insurance premiums from the third year onward, counting from the year following the period in which you received special student payment approval, an additional amount will be added to your current insurance premiums according to the elapsed period.
