Please tell me about the national pension system.

Update date: April 1, 2024

The National Pension System is managed and operated by the government so that the person or his or her bereaved family can receive a pension when they become old, remain severely disabled, or die.
This is a system in which premiums paid by the working generation support the benefits of the recipient generation.

Subscriber

All people living in Japan between the ages of 20 and 60 are eligible to join.
Depending on their occupation, they are divided into first insured, second insured, and third insured, and the enrollment procedures and premium payment methods differ.

Insurance premiums for primary insured persons

Reiwa 6th year

(1) Fixed monthly premium: 16,980 yen (2) Additional monthly premium: 400 yen (only for those who wish to pay)

payment deadline

This is stipulated by law as the last day of the month following the month in which payment is due.
Even if the payment deadline has passed, you can still pay for two years from the deadline.
Note: Please note that payment slips with a "use by date" label cannot be used to pay once the deadline has passed.
Note: Payment slips will be sent by the Japan Pension Service. If payment is difficult, there is an exemption/payment postponement system.

National pension benefits

(1) Old-age Basic Pension (2) Additional Pension (3) Disability Basic Pension (4) Survivor's Basic Pension (5) Widow's Pension (6) Lump-sum Death Note: Paid upon request when requirements are met.

The Japan Pension Service uses easy-to-understand videos to explain the content and benefits of the national pension system, how to pay premiums, and procedures for exemption.
