Does everyone have to enroll in National Health Insurance?

Update date: April 1, 2016

Japan's health insurance system is a "universal health insurance system" in which all people enroll in one of the medical insurance plans.
National Health Insurance is a system of mutual aid in which all members contribute their National Health Insurance taxes to cover necessary medical expenses in preparation for illness or injury.
Age other than those enrolled in the employer's medical insurance (health insurance, seamen's insurance, mutual aid association, etc.) and their dependents, those enrolled in the medical care system for the elderly aged 75 or over, and those receiving public assistance All people are required to enroll in the National Health Insurance, regardless of occupation. (For example, those who are self-employed, those who are engaged in farming, those who work part-time and are not enrolled in workplace health insurance, those who quit their jobs and have quit their workplace health insurance, etc.)

For details on various procedures and benefits for National Health Insurance, please check the "National Health Insurance" page.
