Update date: April 1, 2016

What is overseas medical expenses?

If you are unavoidably required to receive treatment at a local medical institution due to illness or injury while traveling abroad for a trip, you can apply for the medical expenses to be reimbursed as overseas medical expenses after returning to your home country.
However, medical expenses incurred when traveling for treatment purposes are not eligible for payment.

Procedure

(1) You will be required to pay the full amount of expenses incurred at the overseas medical institution where you received your treatment.
(2) Have the patient fill out a ``Medical Details Statement'' and ``Receipt Statement'' as proof of the treatment details and medical expenses required for the treatment at the medical institution.
(3) After returning to your home country, please apply to the National Health Insurance Section of your city hall.
(4) After the application is received, the Tokyo Federation of National Health Insurance Organizations will conduct a review, and based on that decision, a payment decision will be made and the payment will be transferred to the designated bank account. It takes approximately 3 months from application to payment.

Please download and use the "medical details statement" and "receipt statement" here.

Inagi City or a business operator entrusted by Inagi City may refer you to the medical institution where you received medical treatment overseas. Therefore, you will be asked to complete a research consent form.
In principle, the signature should be the same as the signature on the passport of the person who received the treatment.

Amount of overseas medical expenses

The amount of overseas medical expenses paid is basically based on the standard amount when receiving medical treatment benefits for the same injury or illness at a Japanese insurance medical institution, etc., and the standard amount plus the actual treatment expenses paid to the overseas medical institution. It is determined by comparing the amount paid.

Points to remember

(1) Medical procedures that are not covered by insurance in Japan will not be eligible for benefits if they are performed overseas for the purpose of treatment.
(2) If you lose your eligibility for National Health Insurance due to moving overseas, you will not be eligible for benefits.
