Japanese Encephalitis Vaccination

As of May 20, 2011, there has been a revision to the system, expanding the legal vaccination age for those who missed their vaccination opportunities due to the recommendation being withheld.

Background

On May 30, 2005, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare issued a recommendation to refrain from actively promoting Japanese encephalitis vaccination, following the recognition of cases where a causal relationship between the vaccine produced using mouse brains and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) could not be denied.

As of July 29, 2005, the "Ordinance to Partially Amend the Enforcement Order of the Vaccination Law" has abolished the third phase of Japanese encephalitis vaccination for those aged 14 to under 16.

As of June 2, 2009, the Vaccination Implementation Regulations were amended, and the "Dried Cell Culture Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine" (hereinafter referred to as the "new vaccine") was added as a vaccine to be used in the first phase of regular vaccinations.

On April 1, 2010, a notification was received from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare regarding the resumption of active recommendations for the first phase of Japanese encephalitis vaccination for children aged 3 years, which is the standard vaccination age. In response to this, the city has resumed the recommendation notifications for children who turn 3 years old starting from the fiscal year 2010.

As of May 20, 2011, there have been amendments to the Vaccination Implementation Ordinance and the Vaccination Implementation Regulations, expanding the statutory vaccination age for those who missed the opportunity to be vaccinated due to the recommendation being withheld, as detailed below.
Note: 2 has been completed.

1. Those born between June 1, 1995, and April 1, 2007, who are under 20 years old.
   Note: As of April 1, 2013, those born between April 1, 1995, and May 31, 1995, have also been added to the vaccination target group.
2. Those born between April 2, 2007, and October 1, 2009, who have not completed the first phase of Vaccination for Japanese Encephalitis by March 31, 2010, and are between 9 and under 13 years old.

As of the vaccination date, if you are between 13 and under 16 years old and cannot be accompanied by a Parent or Guardian at the time of vaccination, please fill out the necessary information on the documents below and bring them to the medical institution.
