Ship carpenter tools from the middle reaches of the Tama River (Funadaikuyogu)

Updated: September 28, 2020

Various river boats have been used in the midstream of the Tama River around Inagi City since the Edo period. The types of river boats are as follows: Houseboat ( ) , W ( ) Ship (large Horse-drawn ship ( ) and small large sculling boat ( ) ), Fishing vessel ( ) , Gravel ship ( ) , Construction ship ( ) Since the 1940s, wooden Rowing ( ) Boats were also used. Because the waters in the middle reaches of the Tama River are relatively shallow, flat-bottomed, shallow boats were popular. These river boats were built by specialized shipwrights. Tomizo Kuboi ( ) Kuboi (born in 1906, passed away in 1993) began training as a shipwright under his father from around 1921, and built various riverboats until 1990. After his death, 4,708 pieces of shipwright's tools used in the construction of riverboats were donated to the Inagi City Board of Education. These materials convey the construction techniques of riverboats, which were closely related to transportation, recreation, and livelihoods along the Tama River, and are indispensable and valuable cultural assets when considering the life and culture of the midstream of the Tama River. As such, they were designated as a Tangible Folk Cultural Property of Tokyo on March 16, 2020.
