Designated Quantity
What is "designated quantity"
Hazardous substances defined by the Fire Service Act have specified quantities determined by their danger and nature, and these quantities serve as the criteria for hazardous substance regulations.
Please note that the regulations for the storage or handling of hazardous substances change when the amount reaches one-fifth of the specified quantity or the specified quantity itself.
- "Specified quantity or more" → Hazardous materials facilities (regulated by the Fire Service Act)
- "More than one-fifth of the specified quantity, but less than the specified quantity" → Small quantity hazardous material storage and handling facility (regulated by municipal ordinance)
- "Less than one-fifth of the specified quantity" → Municipal regulations stipulate compliance matters for storage and handling.
The specified quantities of major hazardous materials are as follows
- Gasoline 200 liters
- Ethanol, Methanol 400 liters
- Kerosene, light oil 1000 liters
- Heavy oil 2000 liters
If you would like to know the specified quantity of other specific items, please contact the fire department.
When storing or handling multiple hazardous materials in the same location
The total value obtained by dividing the quantity of each hazardous substance stored or handled by its designated quantity must be a multiple of the designated quantity of the hazardous substances stored or handled at that location.
Example: When storing 20 liters of gasoline and 200 liters of kerosene
- Gasoline storage amount 20 liters ÷ specified gasoline quantity 200 liters = 0.1
- Kerosene storage amount 200 liters ÷ specified amount of kerosene 1000 liters = 0.2
In total, (1) + (2) = 0.3.
Therefore, since it is "one-fifth or more but less than the specified quantity," it will be subject to the regulations for small quantity hazardous material storage and handling facilities.
