February 2015: Formulation of the Maintenance Policy for the Minami-Tama Ridge Main Line
The Minami-Tama Ridge Main Line was planned as part of the urban development of Tama New Town in 1969. Although some sections have been developed as four-lane roads, most of it remains as temporary two-lane roads, leading to chronic traffic congestion and the inflow of traffic into residential roads, which has deteriorated the surrounding environment.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has been considering the development forms of the temporary two-lane sections, taking into account the role of a wide-area trunk road network, and established a development policy in February 2015 to make the entire line four lanes and to convert the trench structure sections to flat structures.
Basic Concept
- To alleviate traffic congestion and ensure the functionality of the regional trunk roads, all sections will be expanded to four lanes.
- Due to access to the roadside and the integration with Community Development, it will be a flat structure.
- Make effective use of the current road land and create a road form that considers the surrounding environment.
- The area near the city boundary of Inagi City and Tama City will be constructed as a tunnel, and a route that takes into consideration conservation areas will be examined.
(Conservation areas are regions designated based on regulations concerning the protection and restoration of nature in Tokyo.)
