Voluntary Enrollment System
Voluntary Enrollment from Age 60
The enrollment period for the National Pension is from age 20 to under 60 years old.
However, if you have not met the 10-year qualification period for benefits by the time you turn 60, or if you want to increase your pension amount (it cannot exceed the full amount), you can continue to enroll until age 65.
For those over 60, the payment of insurance premiums will, in principle, be made via bank transfer from a savings account.
Optional Enrollment Exception
Those born before April 1, 1965, who do not meet the pension eligibility period even at the age of 65, can voluntarily enroll until they meet the eligibility period by the age of 70.
Voluntary enrollment for those moving abroad
Japanese nationals aged 20 to under 65 can voluntarily enroll in the National Pension even if they move overseas.
Those who wish to enroll voluntarily should have a domestic collaborator, such as parents or siblings in Japan, to assist with the necessary procedures through the domestic collaborator.
If there is no domestic collaborator, please directly carry out the procedures by mailing to the pension office that has jurisdiction over the last address in Japan.
Notice
Voluntary members are not eligible for the student payment special provision system or the insurance premium exemption system.
