The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department is promoting the installation of "Bicycle Navigation Marks" on the left side of the roadway to encourage safe bicycle passage.

Inagi City Hall will sequentially install this "Bicycle Navigation Mark" on major roads and routes connecting major roads in consultation with the Tama Central Police Station.
The roads where this Bicycle Navigation Mark is installed will help prevent bicycles from going against traffic.

Meaning of Bicycle Navigation Mark

  • The part where bicycles should pass and the direction they should proceed are clearly indicated.
  • Please proceed in the direction of the arrow with your bicycle. (Going against the direction is not allowed.)

Note: This indication is not specified by law, and this indication itself does not designate a new method of traffic. (Traffic methods must comply with legal regulations or traffic signs, etc.)

Points to Note When Using Roads with Bicycle Navigation Marks

The "Bicycle Navigation Mark" does not mean "Bicycle Priority" or similar.
Even when passing through roads with the "Bicycle Navigation Mark" installed, please be sure to pay sufficient attention to cars and pedestrians.
Additionally, when avoiding parked vehicles on the road, please ensure that there are no cars coming from behind you.

When bicycles can use the sidewalk

Bicycles are generally required to travel on the roadway, regardless of the presence of a "bicycle navigation mark."
However, the following cases are stipulated by the Road Traffic Act to allow bicycles to travel on the sidewalk.

  • When the sign "Bicycles Allowed on Sidewalk" is installed (in case the sign on the right is present)
  • When individuals under 13 years old or over 70 years old ride a bicycle (including elementary school students and Older Adults)
  • When people with physical disabilities ride a bicycle
  • When it is unavoidable to walk on the sidewalk for safety (in cases of road construction or when there are parked vehicles on the roadway, posing a danger)

Points to Note When Running on Sidewalks

Sidewalks are primarily for pedestrians, and bicycle use on sidewalks is only permitted in exceptional cases.
When riding a bicycle on the sidewalk, please proceed "slowly" and "closer to the road."
If there are many pedestrians on the sidewalk or if there is a risk of obstructing pedestrian passage, please dismount and walk your bicycle.
If pedestrians are not aware of your presence, instead of ringing a bell, kindly say, "Excuse me, coming through."
