Tamagawa Cycling Course Traffic Rules

About History

The Tama River Cycling Course was established in 1970 to promote health and provide a space for communication among residents. It received occupancy permission based on the River Act from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and construction began on a pedestrian and bicycle-only road on the embankment. In March 2018, the construction work around the Tamagawahara Bridge was completed, allowing passage along approximately 4 kilometers from the Kizamibashi Bridge to the boundary with Kawasaki City, connecting to Kawasaki City's "Kawasaki Tama River Interaction Road."

The Tamagawa Cycling Course is a pedestrian and bicycle-only road.

This is a dedicated road for pedestrians and bicycles, and cars and motorcycles are not allowed to pass.
Note: Vehicles related to patrols, such as patrol motorcycles, and vehicles authorized for maintenance work are excluded.

Please keep to the left side for both pedestrians and bicycles.

The width of the Tamagawa Cycling Course is about 2.5 meters, so we ask that both pedestrians and bicycles keep to the left.

Passing on the Left Side for Pedestrians

According to Article 10, Paragraph 1 of the Road Traffic Act, pedestrians must walk on the right side of the road where there is no distinction between the shoulder (white line) and the roadway. However, since the width of the Tamagawa Cycling Course is about 2.5 meters, we have decided to apply the exception of the same article, allowing pedestrians to also walk on the left side.

Article 10 of the Road Traffic Act (Traffic Division) Paragraph 1

Pedestrians must walk on the right side of the road on roads without a sidewalk or a clearly defined separation between the shoulder and the roadway.
However, if it is dangerous to walk on the right side of the road or in other unavoidable circumstances, pedestrians may walk on the left side of the road.

Installation of Arrows on the Chuo Line

We have installed a center line and arrows to inform pedestrians and cyclists that traffic should keep to the left.

About the Installation of Signboards

In March 2023, a sign was installed to better inform pedestrians and cyclists that they should keep to the left side.

Installation of Road Surface Marking 'Pedestrian Priority'

The Tamagawa Cycling Course is pedestrian priority.
Bicycle users should pay attention to oncoming pedestrians and bicycles when overtaking pedestrians, and please overtake slowly from the right side.

About the Width of the Tamagawa Cycling Course

The Tamagawa Cycling Course is paved on the flat part of the top of the embankment, and the width is about 2.5 meters, which is narrow.
To widen the width, large-scale construction such as widening the top of the embankment and filling the slopes would be necessary, and there is a concern that it could affect the embankment's function, which is why the current width has been established.
