Established in 1995 based on the lessons learned from the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, this unit was legalized through the amendment of the Fire Service Organization Act in June 2003 to enhance and strengthen the emergency response system from a national perspective during large-scale and special disasters.
The Emergency Fire Assistance Team consists of rescue teams and emergency teams registered in advance from fire departments across the country. In the event of large-scale or special disasters that are difficult to manage with the local firefighting capabilities alone, they are dispatched at the request of the Commissioner of the Fire and Disaster Management Agency to conduct firefighting and rescue activities on-site, as part of a nationwide fire support system.
