Tools for Building River Boats

In the midstream area of the Tama River around Inagi City, various types of riverboats have been used since the Edo period. The types of riverboats include houseboats, ferryboats (large horse-drawn boats and small transport boats), fishing boats, gravel boats, and construction boats, and since the 20th century, wooden rowboats have also been used. Due to the relatively shallow water depth in the midstream area of the Tama River, flat-bottomed and shallow boats became common. The construction of these riverboats was carried out by specialized shipwrights. Mr. Tomizo Kuboi, a shipwright residing in Higashi-Naganuma (born in 1906, passed away in 1993), began his apprenticeship under his father around 1921 and built various types of riverboats until 1990. After Mr. Kuboi's death, 4,708 shipwright tools used for riverboat construction were donated to the Inagi City Board of Education. These materials are valuable cultural assets that convey the construction techniques of riverboats closely related to transportation, recreation, and livelihoods around the Tama River, and are indispensable for considering the life and culture of the midstream area of the Tama River. Therefore, they were designated as tangible folk cultural properties of Tokyo on March 16, 2020.
