About specified quantity
Updated: March 29, 2022
What is "specified quantity"?
Hazardous materials stipulated by the Fire Service Act are designated in designated quantities according to their danger and nature, and this quantity is the standard for receiving hazardous materials regulations.
Please note that the amount of storage or handling of dangerous goods changes depending on whether it is one-fifth of the designated amount or when the designated amount is reached.
- "Specified amount or more" → Hazardous material facilities (regulated by the Fire Service Act)
- "More than one-fifth of the designated amount, less than the designated amount" → Small amount of hazardous materials storage facility (regulated by municipal ordinances)
- “Less than one-fifth of the specified quantity” → Municipal ordinances stipulate storage and handling compliance matters.
The designated quantity of main dangerous goods is as follows
- 200 liters of petrol
- Ethanol, methanol 400 liters
- Kerosene, light oil 1000 liters
- Heavy oil 2000 liters
If you would like to know more about the designated quantity of specific items, please contact the fire department.

When storing or handling multiple dangerous goods at the same place
The sum of the values obtained by dividing the quantity of each dangerous substance to be stored or handled by the specified quantity of each dangerous substance will be the multiple of the specified quantity of dangerous substances to be stored or handled at the location.
When 20 liters of gasoline and 200 liters of kerosene are stored (1) 20 liters of stored gasoline ÷ 200 liters of designated amount of gasoline = 0.1
(2) 200 liters of kerosene storage ÷ 1000 liters of specified amount of kerosene = 0.2
Summing up, (1) + (2) = 0.3.
Therefore, since it is "more than 1/5 of the specified quantity and less than the specified quantity", it is subject to the regulation of a small quantity storage facility for hazardous materials.
