Regarding proper disposal of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) waste

Last updated: January 5, 2023

What is polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)?

PCB is an abbreviation for Polychlorinated Biphenyl, an artificially produced, mainly oily chemical substance.
Due to their high convenience, PCBs have been used for a variety of purposes, such as as insulating oil in electrical equipment, as a heat transfer medium in heat exchangers, and in carbonless paper. However, because they are easily soluble in fat, they have been reported to gradually accumulate in the body with chronic ingestion, causing a variety of symptoms. Currently, both their manufacture and import are prohibited, and disposal deadlines have been set for PCB-containing products currently in use, requiring appropriate disposal.
For more information about PCBs, please see the Ministry of the Environment website.
