Current Situation of Caterpillars on Street Trees

Regarding the current situation of caterpillars occurring on street trees in the sidewalks, street trees that are prone to caterpillar infestations include cherry trees and camellias. There are both non-toxic caterpillars such as the monk moth and the American white moth, as well as toxic caterpillars like the Lonomia and the stinging caterpillar. Caterpillars may occur on some street trees from May to September.

Measures to Address Caterpillars on Street Trees

As part of our efforts to manage caterpillars that occur on street trees, we conduct the spraying of non-toxic agents twice a year on street trees that are prone to caterpillar infestations to prevent the occurrence of toxic species such as the Lonomia obliqua and the Euproctis chrysorrhoea. Additionally, if caterpillar occurrences are confirmed based on patrols by staff or information from citizens, we take appropriate measures according to the on-site situation.

Note: The pesticide (Selcoat Agri) creates a film similar to an oblate, preventing the hatching of pest eggs, and when sprayed on leaves, it has the effect of preventing pest damage. It is also used in fertilizers and is therefore a harmless substance to the human body.
