In Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, which is a Friendship City of Inagi City, there is a traditional festival called "Soma Nomaoi" that has a history of over a thousand years.
Soma Nomaoi is said to have originated from the military training conducted by Taira no Masakado, who is considered the ancestor of the Soma clan, when he released wild horses in Shimousa Province (northwestern Chiba Prefecture) and trained his troops by using them as enemy soldiers. This event has been passed down as a sacred ritual praying for the peace and tranquility of the region, and despite many changes over time, it continues to be a vibrant event. It is held over three days and is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of the country. Approximately 400 armored horsemen, adorned with swords at their waists and flags on their backs, gallop in a magnificent and heroic display reminiscent of a historical painting.
This tour has been planned as the first event to visit Soma City from Inagi City. Participants will be able to enjoy the "Main Festival" on the second day, which is featured as a "Highlight" on the official website, from special seats.
There are plenty of highlights, including the "Procession" where over 400 horsemen march through the city carrying a portable shrine, the "Armored Horse Racing" where horse and rider dash through the dust, and the "Divine Flag Contest" where hundreds of horsemen compete to seize the descending sacred flags! Don't miss this opportunity to witness the brave and daring figures of the horsemen from special seats!
