My Town Inagi 2023 Hideyuki Honda

Update date: August 15, 2023

JICA Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers dispatched to Bolivia to convey the joy of physical activity through physical education!

Hideyuki Honda (29), a resident of Oshidate, has been dispatched to Bolivia in South America as a member of the JICA Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers for two years since August.
Mr. Honda worked as a physical education instructor for five years, but when his work came to a halt due to the coronavirus pandemic, he said, ``It's good to hone one technique, but I can adapt to any situation.'' I started thinking, ``I want to acquire skills and ways of thinking.'' He applied for the JICA Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers as an opportunity to spend time abroad and reconsider his values and stereotypes.

On dispatch to Bolivia

During the two-month training session at the Komagane Training Center in Nagano Prefecture, Mr. Honda, who loves studying languages, didn't find the long language classes difficult. In addition, during their free time after class, trainees took part in self-directed lectures where trainees served as instructors and taught each other their areas of expertise. They had a great time deepening their relationships with each other, and the training period was over in the blink of an eye.
Mr. Honda is currently dispatched to Sucre, a city located in the center of Bolivia, where he is teaching physical education. We want local children to learn the joy of physical activity and lead a fulfilling sports life throughout their lives.
He also hopes to use his experience specializing in freestyle football (a competition that showcases soccer lifting, etc.) to show off his performances and expand exchanges.
In addition to this, Mr. Honda also wants to promote Japanese food culture through his specialty dishes. Japanese food, which brings out the natural flavors of the ingredients, is nutritionally balanced and very appealing. He said he wanted to bring Japanese seasonings and make Japanese food with local ingredients to serve the Bolivian people.

I want to be a bridge between Spanish-speaking countries!

When we asked Mr. Honda about his future aspirations, he said, ``I want to fully utilize the experience I've gained in athletic coaching in Bolivia, while interacting with the local culture and people. "I want to become a bridge between Spanish-speaking countries by engaging in interpreting work that will reach many people, not just children," she said emphatically.
I hope that Mr. Honda, who is struggling in a foreign land, will meet various people, gain many experiences, and spread his wings around the world.
