Local Measurement Results of Radiation Levels in Parks and Green Spaces (Updated October 19, 2020)

The measurement results up to now are stable and below the Ministry of the Environment's standard value (0.23 microsieverts per hour). Therefore, based on the city's policy for measuring ambient radiation levels, measurements in parks and green spaces have been suspended since fiscal year 2017.
Additionally, measurements near the monument in Keigi Park were conducted once a year (in August), but starting from fiscal year 2021, these measurements will also be suspended due to stable values within the standard range, as well as the fact that the radiation monitoring post in Shinjuku, which was established before the Great East Japan Earthquake, has returned to pre-earthquake levels. However, if any concerns arise, measurements will be resumed immediately.

Description

When converted to an annual basis, 0.23 microsieverts per hour amounts to 0.99864 millisieverts, which is below the standard for normal radiation exposure for the general public (less than 1 millisievert per year, excluding natural background radiation) as recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). Therefore, this value is used as the city's judgment criterion.
According to the Ministry of the Environment's "Decontamination Guidelines," if the radiation level at 1 meter above the ground is below 0.23 microsieverts per hour, no further action is required. However, our city takes a more cautious approach and makes decisions based on measurement results taken at the closest point to the object (1 centimeter above the ground).

About Cleaning and Other Services

Keigi Park

During the measurements conducted in 2012, results showed values exceeding 0.23 microsieverts per hour near the monument in the park, prompting us to carry out radiation reduction work through cleaning.
After implementing cleaning with a high-pressure washer and brushing on the monument, subsequent measurements confirmed that the radiation levels were below the standard value (refer to "Past Measurement Results" for the figures).

Observation

Regular measurements are conducted at the locations where cleaning has been carried out, and the progress is being monitored. The results of the monitoring are as follows.
