To control the outbreak of mosquitoes

Updated: April 1, 2021

About measures against infectious diseases such as dengue fever transmitted by mosquitoes

In order to prevent the outbreak of mosquito-borne infectious diseases such as dengue fever, it is necessary for citizens and facility managers to control mosquitoes on a daily basis and take measures to prevent mosquito bites.

to reduce mosquitoes

The most effective way to reduce mosquitoes is to get rid of mosquito larvae that live in the water (measures against larvae).

Since Aedes albopictus has a narrow range of activity, areas where it is often bitten can be found in puddles, bushes, etc., which are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Taking countermeasures according to location against these sources will lead to the prevention of mosquitoes.

Larva measures

Empty cans, PET bottles, empty bottles, containers of leftover lunch boxes, water accumulated in old tires ⇒ Unnecessary items, waste should be removed.
If you don't want to remove it, put it upside down in a place where it won't get wet.
Water for watering, puddle in the saucer of the flowerpot ⇒ Place it upside down so that the water does not accumulate. Remove it if you don't need it.
If you store water, change the water frequently (at least once a week).
Cover it with a fine-mesh mesh.
Clogged rain gutters on private property and water accumulated in clogged gutters ⇒ Check and clean regularly to remove clogs and prevent water from accumulating.
Water accumulated in the dents of the rain protection sheet ⇒Eliminate the slack and cover the rain protection sheet so that there are no dents.
Hollows in wood or stone ⇒ Fill the hollows with a filler such as putty to prevent water from accumulating.
Rainwater and drainage basins on private land ⇒ Clean them frequently.

To avoid being bitten by mosquitoes

Aedes albopictus live in bushes and shade and tend to feed during the day. Therefore, it is effective to take measures to prevent mosquito bites when doing outdoor activities during the day (anti-adult measures).

Measures against adult insects

Prevent mosquitoes from entering.
・Install screens on windows.
・Open and close the entrance door and windows quickly.
・Install insect screens on the ventilation pipes of septic tanks and drainage tanks, which are breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Eliminate mosquito hiding places.
- Bushes and grassy areas are hiding places for mosquitoes, so be sure to cut weeds regularly and prune trees appropriately to improve ventilation.
To prevent blood-sucking and to avoid being bitten when going to areas where there are many mosquitoes, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to avoid exposing your skin.
・Avoid wearing sandals with bare feet.
・Use repellents and mosquito coils as necessary. When using chemicals such as household insecticides, please read the precautions carefully before use.

June is Tokyo's "Mosquito Prevention Month".
