Beware of the poisonous "redback spider" and "grey redback spider"

Updated: November 9, 2022

Redback spiders and grayback spiders with poison and their egg sacs are found in the city.
Redback spiders and grayback spiders are invasive alien species, but they have been confirmed throughout Japan and are thought to have become established in Japan.
If you find a similar spider in your garden, don't panic, and refer to the following extermination methods to deal with it appropriately.
Both spiders are timid and docile and not aggressive, but they are highly venomous spiders, so be careful not to catch them with your bare hands or touch them.
You will not be bitten unless you apply stimulation, but if you are bitten, wash the bitten area with water and seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Removal method

In addition to using commercially available pyrethroid insecticides, you can also use physical methods such as pouring boiling water over them or squeezing them with shoes. Please use).
If you trample the egg sac with your shoes, wash the soles of your shoes thoroughly to prevent spiders from hatching from the remaining egg sac.
Also, if you find one, it may be lurking in the surroundings, so be careful, such as checking carefully.

Symptoms of being bitten

It is said that the pain is felt like being stabbed by a needle, and that the pain spreads beyond the site of the bite.
Symptoms such as muscle pain and headache may continue for several weeks.
There are reports of severe cases such as muscle paralysis, so caution is required.

What to do if bitten

If you are bitten by a spider, please seek medical attention immediately.
In severe cases, treatment with antitoxin serum is required.
If possible, bring the spider you killed to the hospital so that we can identify the type of spider that bit you.

to avoid spider bites

Redback spiders and brown widow spiders can also be found in urban areas, such as the guttering of road gutters, the joints of wire mesh fences, under vending machines, small gaps such as garbage cans, water faucets, and water and gas meter boxes. In addition, it may be brought indoors by attaching to umbrellas, clothes, toys, etc. placed outdoors.
It is a spider that can live throughout the year, such as staying in a small space with a heat-retaining effect during the extreme cold season, and staying in a small space with high heat insulation during the high temperature season. Areas where spiders are likely to live should be cleaned regularly to make them difficult to live in.
Only females are venomous, and when bitten, a sharp pain similar to being stabbed by a needle is felt, and if the symptoms are severe, the pain spreads throughout the body and may cause nausea and headaches.
Insects can be killed by spraying commercially available household insecticides. You can also protect yourself by wearing rubber gloves when working outdoors, such as cleaning or tending flowerbeds.
