How to dispose of garbage at evacuation shelters during disasters

Updated: July 10, 2020

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread, paying attention to the following points when disposing of garbage during disasters will not only help prevent the spread of infection in evacuation shelters, but is also an important action for the smooth and safe collection and disposal of garbage and recyclables not only for evacuees but also for evacuation shelter operators and those engaged in cleaning and recycling businesses.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

How to dispose of garbage at the evacuation center

Avoid littering!

Be careful not to scatter the garbage by tying it together in small garbage bags for each household.
Also, please refrain from throwing away garbage such as masks.

If you are disposing of it in a small garbage bag, make sure to remove the air before disposing of it!

This makes it easier to carry garbage bags during collection and transportation work, and prevents them from bursting in the collection vehicle.

Check the rules for separating garbage at evacuation shelters!

The way recyclables are sorted and disposed of may be different from usual. Please follow the rules of the evacuation center and separate your waste.

How to dispose of garbage in a dedicated space for people with symptoms such as fever or cough

When disposing of masks, tissues, diapers, etc. that have runny nose, etc. in the designated space for people with symptoms such as fever or cough, please be careful of the following:
・Be sure to tie the bag tightly so that it does not come in direct contact with the garbage!
・Wash your hands thoroughly after throwing away trash! If you don't have access to water, disinfect your hands.
