Cat Repellent Measures
How to prevent cats from entering the garden and other areas
Cats enter your garden and defecate or urinate because your home is more comfortable for them than any other place in the vicinity.
A comfortable place for cats is defined as "a quiet and safe area with little human traffic and no guard dogs," "an area with soft soil, sand, or grass that allows for comfortable elimination," and "a place where food can be easily obtained without having to search for it." To prevent cats from coming, it is important to change that environment, but actually making those changes can be quite difficult.
Below are methods that are said to be relatively effective. If you want to keep cats away, please give them a try.
Note 1: Please take measures to deter cats within your own property.
Note 2: There may be individual differences in cats, and the effectiveness may not be apparent. Thank you for your understanding.
Repellent
This is a method to make it difficult for cats to approach due to smells that cats dislike.
Let's proceed with the following points in mind.
- Due to rain and wind, the effectiveness may diminish, so let's replace it regularly to maintain its efficacy.
- When cats get used to it, it becomes ineffective, so let's change the type from time to time.
- There are also things that have a strong odor or can cause discoloration. It is advisable to explain this to your neighbors in advance.
Repellent | How to Use |
---|---|
Coffee grounds, tea leaves | Spread coffee grounds after brewing, and tea leaves from dokudami tea and others. |
Rice washing water | Sprinkle thick sauce at the beginning of polishing every day. |
Peels of citrus fruits such as mikan | Peel citrus fruits. Place a chemical with a citrus scent. |
Cooking Vinegar | Place it in a container or soak it in a sponge or cloth. Spray a solution diluted with water at a ratio of about 2 to 10 times. |
Wood Vinegar | Place it in a container or soak it in a sponge or cloth. If sprayed, it is also effective for eliminating cat odors. |
Herbs and other plants | Plant herbs that have scents that cats dislike, or place potted plants in the cat's path. Alternatively, use herbal fragrances. (Such as geranium, lemongrass, spearmint, rosemary, peppermint, rue, tansy, lemon tea tree, chives, etc.) |
Obstacles
This is a method to create conditions that are difficult for cats to walk or enter.
Even if it is not implemented throughout, if the entry point is limited, let's try installing it at that location first.
Let's proceed with the following points in mind.
- Let's install it in a place where there is no risk of people falling or getting injured.
- Do not place water-filled plastic bottles, as they can cause fires.
Obstacles | How to Use |
---|---|
Wed | Water generously with a hose. |
Gravel | Spread larger gravel with corners. |
Pine Cone | Paved where the cat walks. |
Dead Branch | When spread over areas where bulbs and seeds are planted, they will not be dug up. |
Holly Leaves |
Place holly leaves or small branches with leaves here and there. |
Large Stone |
Place stones in positions where one cannot physically walk. |
Spiky Sheet | Available at home centers and garden stores. You don't have to cover the entire area; just lay it down to a width that can be jumped over. |
Adhesive Tape | Place the adhesive side of the duct tape or double-sided tape facing up. (This is because they dislike having sticky feet.) Replace it when the adhesive strength decreases. |
Fine mesh net | It is difficult to walk because the nails get caught when laid down. |
Aluminum foil | It makes noise when stepped on, so it is disliked. |
Net and Fence |
Surround with a net or fence that is an insurmountable height (about 1.5 meters), or block the access route. |
Tegusu | Stretch fishing line or similar materials at a height where a cat's paws can get caught, at entry points or pathways. Cats cannot see fishing line, so they dislike the feeling of something touching them. |
Disposable Chopsticks | Stand in the passageway or flower bed. |
Soft soil can easily become a cat's toilet area, so one method is to cover it with tiles or concrete. However, there are some cats that may not respond to this.
