Introduction of Designated Cultural Properties for Fiscal Year 2024
Kawagatani Pottery Kiln Ruins - Artifacts Excavated in 1956
The Omaru Kawarayato kiln site is a site where tiles for the Musashi Kokubunji were produced during the Nara period. The first academic excavation was conducted in 1956, and two tile kiln sites were discovered. The investigation revealed that it is a site where tiles and bricks supplied to the Musashi Kokufu were produced during the founding period of the Musashi Kokubunji. The excavated artifacts are important materials that clarify the construction and tile production situation of the Musashi Kokubunji and Kokufu during the Nara period.
Thirteen Buddha Stone Tablet
The belief in the Thirteen Buddhas is a collective worship of the Five Tathagatas, Seven Bodhisattvas, and One Myo-o, which became popular among the common people after the Muromachi period. The Thirteen Buddha stone tablet was created as a result of this belief. Although this tablet does not have an inscription indicating the date of its creation, it is estimated to be from around the Bunmei era (1469 to 1489) based on the shapes of the canopy and lotus pedestal, as well as the condition of the three offerings (incense burner, candlestick, and flower vase). It is a valuable historical document with few parallels among the medieval stone tablet materials currently confirmed.
