Inagi City's special product "grapes"

Updated: August 14, 2023

I miss you in the summer. Takao grapes

Inagi Takao grapes

Along with pears, the Takao grape is also popular as a specialty of Inagi.

This variety, named after Tokyo's famous mountain, Mt. Takao, is a large seedless grape whose parent is Kyoho, and its grains are shaped like rugby balls.

Harvest season starts from late August. Due to its high sugar content, good taste and aroma, and ease of eating, it is loved as a representative flavor of Inagi, along with pears.

History of grape cultivation in Inagi City

The grape "Takao" is a variety developed at the Tokyo Metropolitan Agricultural Experiment Station in Tachikawa City in the 1950s. Although the quality is excellent, it is difficult to manage the cultivation, so it was not widely used.

However, in Inagi City, farmers who fell in love with these grapes began cultivating them around 1973-1974. In 1976, the Inagi City Takao Grape Study Group was established. After repeated trial and error, it gradually got on track, and now Inagi's "Takao" is established as a brand of gift grapes.
