The duration varies for each election. Early voting begins the day after the public announcement (proclamation date). The term is 16 days for members of the House of Councillors and prefectural governors, 14 days for mayors of designated cities, 11 days for members of the House of Representatives, 9 days for members of the city council of designated cities, 8 days for prefectural assembly members, 6 days for city and ward mayors and city and ward council members, and 4 days for town and village mayors and town and village council members.
