My Town Inagi 2018 Tadayoshi Ogawa
Updated: January 5, 2018
75-year-old World No. 2 athlete who keeps going because it's fun
In October 2017, the Ironman World Championships, a triathlon tournament, was held, and Mr. Ogawa, who lives in Yanoguchi, participated and won second place in the world in the 75 to 79 age group.
The Ironman World Championships are held annually in Kona, Hawaii, and feature a 3.8km swim, 180.2km bike run and a 42.195km marathon. This is the world's most prestigious tournament, in which you can only participate if you finish in the top ranks in qualifying tournaments around the world.
A strong wind called "Kona Wind" blew in Kona, and the humidity was higher than usual on the day of the event, making it a tough competition. Mr. Ogawa sprung a lot of water to prevent dehydration and controlled his pace to finish in 2nd place. When asked about his impressions, he said, "Everyone who finishes the race is the winner. The ranking is next."
Mr. Ogawa started triathlon when he was 60 years old. "I don't want to get old without doing anything. I want to challenge myself to something." At first it was a short distance, but gradually I became captivated and continue to this day.
It seems that what I am careful about in my usual training is "not to overdo it". If I overdo it and damage my body, I won't be able to practice for a while, so I decide the amount of practice while watching my physical condition. I still swim 3-4 times a week, run 2-3 times a week, and bike twice a week.
When asked about the appeal of triathlon, he said, "It's tough during the race, but I can't forget the excitement of cheering and cheering and the joy of reaching the finish line. I will continue to participate in competitions in various countries and feel the difference in scenery and cheering." I want to continue, because it's fun above all."
Mr. Ogawa is always smiling and energetic. I hope you will continue to take care of yourself and enjoy your activities.
