Omaru Water Supply
Omaru Water and Omaru Water Land Improvement District
What is Omaru Water Supply?
The Omaru Water, which is agricultural water, draws water from the Tama River at the Omaru intake and supplies it to orchards and rice fields up to Tama City in Kawasaki. The total length, including 9 main streams and about 200 tributaries, reaches 70 km.
The excavation of the Omaru Water is believed to have occurred in the early Edo period, as part of the Edo Shogunate's large-scale flood control and water utilization policies, and was developed as agricultural water along with other waterways in the Tama River basin. The finely branched waterways have been ingeniously designed, including three-dimensional intersections, to supply water to farmland up to the present day.
Even now, it mainly supplies water to farmland, and has also been developed as a waterfront park, becoming a valuable waterside space for citizens to relax.
What is the Omaru Irrigation Land Improvement District?
The Omaru Irrigation Land Improvement District is an agricultural organization that utilizes the Omaru irrigation system, consisting of farmers from the Omaru, Oshitate, Higashi-Naganuma, and Yanokuchi areas of Inagi City, as well as from the Sugajoshita, Suga, Sugadoro, Suga Inadazutsumi, and Suga Baba districts of Kawasaki City.
In the Omaru Irrigation Land Improvement District, we mainly maintain and manage the Omaru Irrigation Headworks, which is the entrance to the Omaru irrigation system, and adjust the water volume to ensure stable water supply to farmland during the irrigation period (from May to September). Additionally, the members take the lead in the community and conduct dredging of the irrigation channels several times a year.
In recent years, the number of members has been declining due to rapid urbanization and the aging of farmers, but we are working hard to maintain the functions of the Omaru irrigation system, a historically significant agricultural water source that has continued since the Edo period, in cooperation with relevant organizations.
