Newborn hearing screening
Update date: December 1, 2020
What is newborn hearing testing?
A newborn hearing test is a test conducted shortly after birth to detect hearing problems early on. During the test, a sleeping baby is exposed to small sounds, and a computer analyzes and determines the baby's response to the stimulation. There are two types of results: pass and refer; pass means that there is no problem with your hearing at this time, and refer means that further testing is required. If a baby requires a more detailed examination, a specialist in hearing loss in children will carefully diagnose the baby based on the development of hearing ability. Thanks to this test, hearing loss in babies can often be detected through early testing after birth, and support for babies can now be started from an early age. Be proactive in getting tested.
Public funding for newborn hearing tests
Inagi City subsidizes a portion of the cost of newborn hearing tests conducted at commissioned medical institutions in Tokyo.
In order to receive the subsidy, a "Newborn Hearing Test Consultation Form" is required. Please use this consultation ticket by around 1 month after birth.
In addition, if a newborn hearing test is conducted at a medical institution outside of Tokyo due to reasons such as returning home , a ``newborn hearing test consultation fee subsidy for returning home etc.'' will be provided.
