We are looking for ideas for draining food waste

Update date: April 1, 2021

Since the introduction of a garbage fee in October 2004, the city has been working with citizens to meet the garbage reduction target of ``15% reduction compared to fiscal 2003'' per person per day, set in the general waste treatment basic plan. Thanks to your cooperation, we achieved this goal in 2007 and have been working to reduce it year by year, and in 2011 we were able to achieve a 21.1% reduction compared to 2003.
On the other hand, looking at the results of a waste composition analysis conducted in 2011, approximately 40% of combustible waste is "food waste." Of this, the moisture content of food waste is approximately 70%, and as we aim to further reduce waste in the future, "draining water from food waste" has become a major issue.
Reducing garbage by reducing food waste does not just mean reducing garbage; if you can replace the garbage bags you usually use at home with ones that are one size smaller than before, it will have a positive impact on your household budget. brings.
This is not the only positive effect that "draining food waste" has.

An example of the positive impact of “draining kitchen waste”

・Reduction of unpleasant odors (odors are less likely to come out when there is less moisture)
- Preventing damage from crows (low moisture means less odor, making it difficult for crows to approach)
・Reduction in the amount of carbon dioxide generated when incinerating collected garbage (lower water content allows for more efficient combustion, resulting in energy savings)

This page introduces a simple method for draining food waste that can be put into practice right away at home.We encourage everyone to practice "draining food waste" and help reduce waste.

Garbage drainage idea collection

Here are some of the ideas we received from you regarding draining food waste.
(Please introduce your ideas and recommendations for draining food waste in your home.)
・Place items with relatively low moisture content, such as vegetable peels, in a basket or colander, place them on a windowsill, etc., and let them dry before throwing them away. There may be some moisture coming out, so it's a good idea to place a food tray on top.
On the other hand, if you use something that contains a lot of water, put it in a container such as miso or yogurt filled with water after use, and then soak it further in water to release more water when you drain it. be able to. (Female resident of Hyakumura)
・If you cut the end of a used food storage bag a little, put the food scraps in the drainer bag, and then squeeze it, you can drain more water without getting your hands dirty. (Female in her 30s and 40s, living in Higashi-Naganuma)
・First of all, don't get it wet. Put the garbage in a plastic bag, drain it overnight, and let it become dry before throwing it away. (Female, resident in the city)
・Drain well and wrap in newspaper. Or bury it in the field. (Male in his 70s, living in Sakahama)
・Leave it for a while. (Male in his 30s-40s living in Oshidate)
・Don't dispose of the skins or edges of vegetables in the sink; instead, throw them directly into the trash can to keep them from getting wet. (Female, resident in the city)
・Cut the stockings with wires and use them as draining bags, then divide them into small pieces and throw them away. (Female, resident in the city)

(If you have any other ideas for reducing waste, please let us know.)
・I try to cut the skins of carrots and daikon radish into strips and eat them as kinpira. If you don't have enough kinpira to make kinpira, you can add them first like root vegetables when frying or boiling them, and they will soften and be ready to eat. Vegetable peels are high in fiber and nutritious, so I try to eat them instead of disposing of them in the garbage. (Female resident of Hyakumura)
・I sprinkle tea leaves on the soil of my plants. (A woman in her 30s or 40s who lives in Higashinagumanuma)
・First of all, don't sell! Not buy! A society of reuse! (Female, resident in the city)
・Use a garbage disposal machine that can be used in the kitchen. (Female, resident in the city)

(*We will continue to introduce ideas we receive from everyone on our homepage!)
