I am a foreigner who came to Japan, do I have to register as a resident?

Updated: August 30, 2013

Foreign nationals staying in Japan for more than 3 months in principle must register as a resident at the city hall of their place of residence after receiving a residence card at the immigration office.

  • 16 years old or older must apply in person
  • If you are under 16 years old, apply by proxy (parents and other relatives who live with you)
