Updated: August 31, 2015
Article 24 of the Fire Service Law stipulates that anyone who discovers a fire must report it to the fire department. However, if a fire engine is dispatched in response to a call to 119, but there is no smoke or flames at the scene, and a false report is made, it is stipulated that a fine of up to 300,000 yen or detention will be imposed.
In addition, a person who made a mischievous call is guilty of obstruction of business by fraudulent means as a crime of obstructing fire service, and is stipulated in Article 233 of the Penal Code to be punished by imprisonment with work for not more than three years or a fine of not more than 500,000 yen.
