Regarding tax deductions for donations

In principle, any portion of your hometown tax payment (donation) that exceeds 2,000 yen will be fully deductible from your income tax and individual inhabitant tax up to a certain upper limit.

(1) Those filing a final tax return or resident tax return

In order to qualify for the donation deduction from income tax and local resident tax, you must file a tax return.

  • Please keep the receipt you receive when making a deposit as it can be used as proof of your donation.
  • By March 15th of the year following the year in which you made your hometown tax donation, you must file a final tax return (income tax return) with the tax office in charge of your place of residence, or a resident tax return with the city, town or village in charge of your place of residence. Please attach a receipt when doing so.
  • When you file a final tax return, your income tax will be deducted (refunded) for the year in which you paid hometown tax. In addition, the resident tax for the year following the hometown tax payment will be deducted (reduced).
  • When you file a residence tax return, your residence tax for the year following your hometown tax payment will be deducted (reduced).

When filing your tax return, automatic data entry using the My Number Portal link is convenient.
With Mynaportal Linkage, you can automatically input income information such as deduction information for hometown tax donations and medical expenses, and withholding slip information for salary income and pension income. In addition, information such as donation receipts obtained using Mynaportal Linkage can be sent as attachment data together with tax return data when submitting tax return via e-Tax (electronic filing), so there is no need to submit or save paper donation receipts.
Please note that you will need to make some advance preparations to use the My Number Portal linkage. Depending on the issuer of your deduction certificate, etc., it may take several days from the time you complete the linkage procedure until you can obtain the data on your deduction certificate, etc., so please make the preparations early.
For details, please see the National Tax Agency's "My Number Portal Link Special Page" and "Tax Return Preparation Corner."
