An alternative event for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay has been held!

Updated: July 9, 2021

The Olympic Torch Relay, which was scheduled to run in the city on Friday, July 9, 2021, has been canceled due to the influence of the new coronavirus infection.

Therefore, a replacement event was held on the same day at Machida Shibahiro in Machida City, with only those involved in the event in attendance.

On that day, Mayor Inagi lit the torch for the first runner, and the 21 torchbearers who were scheduled to run through the city connected the torch with torches.

Unfortunately, it was not possible to run on public roads, but the torch relay was carried out by the torchbearers who were smiling from beginning to end.
