About the importance of maintenance and management

Updated: December 23, 2022

overview

Regarding automated external defibrillators (AEDs), since the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced in July 2004 how to use and handle them by citizens present at life-saving scenes, they have been used not only in medical institutions but also in schools, stations, It is becoming popular mainly in public facilities and commercial facilities.
On the other hand, AEDs are designated as highly controlled medical devices and specified maintenance controlled medical devices under the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act, and if not properly managed, they may have a serious impact on human life and health. It's a medical device.
For this reason, it is more important than ever to ensure proper maintenance and management of AEDs in order to prevent serious incidents such as failure to perform properly due to poor management when AEDs are used.

Matters that AED installers should take

AED installers should appoint a person to carry out daily inspections of the installed AEDs, and carry out daily inspections according to the attached documents and instruction manual.

About the role of the person in charge of inspection

  • Daily inspections

Please check daily that the AED is ready for use by checking the color and display of the indicator light on the AED itself.

  • Consumables management

Consumables (electrode pads and batteries) require regular replacement. Attach a display label to the main body of the AED or storage case, etc. to indicate when to replace consumables and easily check the written information from the outside.Based on this label, you can understand when to replace the electrode pads and battery, and take appropriate measures. Please replace it at the appropriate time.
Also, please note that the AED itself has a service life. The service life varies depending on the model, so please check the documentation attached to the AED or contact the manufacturer.

  • Support for replacing consumables

When replacing electrode pads or batteries, please use the new labels or stickers that came with the new electrode pads, write the time for the next replacement, and then attach them to the AED.

Regarding outsourcing of management etc. under AED maintenance contract

Those who purchase or install an AED can also enter into a maintenance contract with an AED distributor or repair company and entrust the management of the installed AED to that company.
