Origin of the place name “Inagi”

Updated: June 28, 2017

Birth of Inagi Village

April 1, 1889 (Meiji 22), Outside Higashinaga ( ) Five ( ) mosquito Village Association ( ) Headman's Office ( ) The six villages under the jurisdiction of the shogunate - Higashinagumanuma, Yanokuchi, Omaru, Hyakumura, Sakahama, and Hirao - were merged into one village with the promulgation of the town and village system, and "Inagi Village" was born. The name Inagi was given to the village at this time.
On April 25th of the same year, the village of Inagi was established. Jorakuji Temple ( ) Village council elections were held and 12 council members were elected.
Furthermore, on June 8th, following a resolution from the village council, he was appointed as the first village mayor. Seinosuke Mori ( ) was appointed.
At that time, Kitatama County Kamisomeya Village ( ) The village of Oshidate, which was under the jurisdiction of the headman's office, was created at this time as a new village called " Tama ( ) It became part of the "village."
In this way, the town and village system was promulgated in 1888, and the villages of Inagi and Tama were created the following year. The villages that had existed since the Edo period were abolished, and the villages within the villages were reorganized. Oaza ( ) I decided to continue living as a

When towns and villages merge, the government will decide on the names of the new towns and villages. Merger ( ) In this case, the name of Omachi village, Merger of equals ( ) In this case, please write the old village name as " In the middle of ( ) " and named it after himself.
In the case of Inagi Village, there was no particularly large village among the six villages that would make up the new village, so it is thought that from the very beginning, consideration was given to the new village name that would result from the merger of equals.
As the merger movement progressed, various candidates for the new village name were proposed and considered, but unfortunately, no historical documents related to the naming of the new village have been found to date, so the origin of the place name "Inagi" cannot be determined clearly.
However, there are some legends and old research that remain, and we would like to introduce them to you.

Two theories about the origin of the place name “Inagi”

The late Kawashima of Higashinaganuma Takuzo ( ) He tells the story of his father, Yoshizo Kawashima, as a legend.
According to the document, he was the head of the Higashinaganuma and five other villages association, and later became the first village mayor. Seinosuke Mori ( ) was approached for advice regarding the new village name. Doubt ( ) Founder of the school Kubo Zenryou ( ) Two candidates, "Inaho" and "Inagi," were presented, and in the end "Inagi" was selected.
In selecting "Inagi," the areas of Yanokuchi, Higashinagumanuma, and Daimaru were selected. fort ( ) ( Ozawa Castle ( )Naganuma Castle ( )Daimaru Castle ( ) The historical fact that there was a rice farm in this area, and the fact that this area has been a rice producing region and has produced good quality rice since ancient times were taken into consideration. (Takuzo Kawashima, " Kubo Zenryou ( ) With the teacher Doubt ( ) (From the 1986 issue of "Juku")

Also, in Komae Masayoshi Ishii ( ) He wrote " Musashino-go Land Names ( ) "(Draft)" (owned by the late Mr. Ishii Kanjo of Komae City) states, "Inagi Village should have been called Inage Village, but without permission, Inagi was named after the meaning of Inage."
It is not clear on what basis this historical document was written, but it is believed that the name "Inage Village" was initially chosen and the area was divided into Kanagawa Prefecture. Petition ( ) But permission was not given, Literal meaning ( ) The village was named "Inagi Village" to reflect this connection.

The above two points are the only confirmed records regarding the origin of the village name ``Inagi''. Let's consider these two theories next.

This was created in 1886, three years before the founding of Inagi Village. Geography ( ) Edited by ( ) Interrogation Record ( ) The history section of the book describes the historical background of six villages within the city.
Looking at this, we can see that the text is almost the same for each village, and we can see descriptions such as "The historical events are unknown, but during the Kamakura period, Inage Saburo Shigenari ruled over it, and later, Shigenari's clan gave Ozawa Sakonshokan Nobushige to them, and during the Oan period, Ozawa Saemonnojo Kunitaka ruled over it."
This area was established in the Kamakura period. Inage ( ) Mr. Ozawa ( ) It is recorded that it was his property.
It can be said that the villagers of this period shared a common historical understanding of "Inage" and "Ozawa."
Given this, it would not have been surprising if "Inage" had been chosen as the new village name, but this was not approved, and it is unclear why it later became "Inagi."

In any case, when it came to creating a new village, many people had their ideas, and after much consideration, they may have finally settled on Inagi.
At present, the origin of the place name "Inagi" cannot be revealed, but we hope that new concrete historical materials will be discovered in the future.
