Sakahama Hirao district

Update date: March 24, 2022

This area is located approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Shinjuku subcenter, and is the entrance to Tama New Town. The Keio Sagamihara Line passes through the center of the area, and the Misawa River, a first-class river, and the Tsurukawa Highway run almost parallel to it.
The current situation around this area is approximately 1.9 km from east to west, and approximately 1.9 km from north to south, surrounded by Tama New Town to the north, Tokyo Yomiuri Country Club and Komazawa Gakuen to the east, Hirao Danchi to the south, and Kurikidai, Asao Ward, Kawasaki City to the west. It is an area of approximately 212 hectares and extends for 2.0 kilometers.

Basic policy for town development

The Sakahama-Hirao district is located in the lush Tama Hills, and there are many Satoyama and wooded areas that have been closely connected to people's lives since ancient times, as well as many historic shrines and temples. However, development pressure is increasing due to its location, which is relatively close to Shinjuku subcenter, and the progress of urbanization in the surrounding area. For this reason, there is a risk of disorderly urbanization, and systematic urban development is required to prevent this from happening.
In August 1997, the city plan for this area was approved by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government for the Sakahama Hirao Land Readjustment Project. However, implementation of the land readjustment project has become difficult due to changes in Tokyo's public housing supply policy and deterioration in business profitability due to the long-term economic slump.
For this reason, the local community, Inagi City, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government formed the Sakahama-Hirao Town Development Study Committee, and established the following committee: (1) town development areas based on district planning, (2) areas that maintain the current environment, and (3) aspects such as cooperative enforcement. We decided to review town development in three categories of urban development promotion areas.
Subsequently, (1) the Sakahama Nishi district district plan was decided on October 4, 2007 for the town development area in the district plan. Within the area (3), the land readjustment project has been completed in the Kamihirao district (approximately 25.1 hectares) by the association, and the land readjustment project in the Kodara district (approximately 29.3 hectares) has been completed by the association. is currently being implemented.
