About organic fluorine compounds

Updated: December 6, 2024

About organic fluorine compounds in tap water

The presence of organic fluorine compounds in tap water has been reported in some newspapers and other media.
Regarding organic fluorine compounds in tap water, they were designated as a "water quality management target setting item" on April 1, 2020, with the provisional target value being "50 ng/L or less for the combined amount of PFOS and PFOA."
Inagi City's tap water is currently supplied by purified water from the Higashimurayama Water Purification Plant.
The Higashimurayama Water Purification Plant is managed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which regularly tests for organic fluorine compounds.
Test results to date show that the levels are significantly below the national provisional water quality management target value (50 nanograms per liter for PFOS and PFOA combined, where nano is one part per billion), and are not posing a risk to health.
In addition, in Inagi City, all water supply operations have been transferred to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government as of April 1, 2012.
Please refer to the links below for information on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Waterworks Bureau's initiatives and water quality test results.

Note: The presence of PFOS and PFOA in the environment in well water is being investigated in Tokyo.

Regarding NHK's reporting

In the "National Map of PFAS in Tap Water" featured in the NHK Special "Investigative Reporting New Century File 8: Tracking PFAS Contamination" broadcast on December 1, 2024, Inagi City was classified as "red," exceeding the provisional target value (50 ng/L). However, this reflects the maximum value detected within the water supply area of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Waterworks Bureau, which has jurisdiction over Inagi City, and is reflected in all municipalities within the water supply area. The test results for tap water in Inagi City do not exceed the provisional target value for national water quality management.
