When it is difficult to pay the national pension insurance premium due to economic circumstances, etc., there is a system that exempts or defers the payment of the insurance premium.
If you are receiving livelihood assistance under the Public Assistance Act, or if you are receiving a disability pension (grade 1 or 2), you can exempt the full amount of insurance premiums retroactively to the date you received it by submitting a notification.
When it is difficult to pay insurance premiums due to a decrease in income or unemployment, all or part of the premiums can be exempted by applying and receiving approval. An application is required every year, and the approval period is from July to June of the following year.
Note: If a full exemption is approved and you wish to continue to receive a full exemption from the following fiscal year onwards, you can omit the submission of the application form from the following fiscal year onwards. However, this does not apply when you apply for a special case due to unemployment.
Approval for partial exemption will be invalidated and non-payment will occur if partial payment is not made.
As a special exception, a special measure will be applied to the person who retired from the company, assuming that there was no income.
A copy of the employment insurance insured person's separation notice or a copy of the notification of eligibility to receive employment insurance benefits is required to receive the exception.

If your application is approved and you plan to stay in school for the next academic year and beyond, the Japan Pension Service will send you an "Application for Special Payment of National Pension Premiums for Students" (postcard) in late March.
