Various river boats have been used since the Edo period in the middle basin of the Tama River around Inagi City. Types of river boats include houseboats, ferry boats (large horse boats and small tenma boats), fishing boats, gravel boats, Wooden rowing boats were also used for construction ships, etc. from the 1940s onwards. Since the water depth is relatively shallow in the middle reaches of the Tama River, boats with flat bottoms and shallow bottoms became popular. These riverboats were built by specialized shipwrights. Mr. Tomizo Kuboi (born in 1904, passed away in 1993), a shipwright living in Higashi-Naganuma, began training as a shipwright under his father around 1921. We built various river boats until 1990. After Mr. Kuboi's death, 4,708 shipbuilding tools used in riverboat construction were donated to the Inagi City Board of Education. These materials convey the construction techniques of riverboats, which were closely related to transportation, tourism, and livelihoods along the Tama River. Therefore, it was designated as a tangible folk cultural property of Tokyo on March 16, 2020.
