Wooden standing statue of Sho Kannon
When you walk through Seichikoen, a sacred place within Yomiuriland, you can see many cultural assets such as buildings, Buddhist statues, stonework, and sculptures. Among them, the wooden standing statue of Shokannon (Mokuzo Shokannon), which is enshrined in the hall below Myoken-do, is a precious Buddhist statue that has been designated as a nationally designated important cultural property. The statue is made of a single piece of painted cypress, is approximately 154 cm tall, and comes with a wooden lotus pedestal. The total height including the pedestal is approximately 185cm. The painted parts of the Buddha statue and pedestal are now beginning to peel off considerably. The Buddhist statue is thought to have been made in the early Heian period (approximately 820 to 850). Although this Buddha statue was not originally in the Inagi area, it can be said to be the oldest Buddha statue in the city. It was designated as a national important cultural property in August 1951.
